Dr. Patricia Makokis

Dr. Patricia Makokis is a nehiyaw iskwew (Cree woman), married to Eugene Makokis and is
mother to daughter Janice and son James Makokis all from Onihcikiskwapiwin (Saddle Lake
Cree Nation) of Treaty No. 6 Territory. She is kokum (grandmother) to three and half year old
grandson, Atayoh.

Patricia serves the People, seeing herself as a grassroots servant leader. She has taught front line,
been a Vice Principal, a Principal and has taught many years at the post-secondary level. Most
of her career has been within the Indigenous community. Recently she accepted a term position
at the University of Alberta in the Faculty of Extension.

She received her Doctor of Education degree from the University of San Diego in 2000. Her
dissertation, An Insider's Perspective: The Dropout Challenge for Canada's First Nations in
Provincial High Schools allowed her the opportunity to do the deep dive into the colonial history
we find ourselves climbing out of now.

Her work is about giving Indigenous knowledge its rightful place wherever she works / travels.
Most importantly, she states, she is a grassroots, servant of the PEOPLE and believes in building
allied relationships.
