Paul is the author of several books including, Helping Children Succeed: What Works and Why (2016), Whatever It Takes: Geoffrey Canada’s Quest to Change Harlem and America (2008), and How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity, and the Hidden Power of Character (2012), which was translated into 27 languages and spent more than a year on The New York Times hardcover and paperback best-seller lists.

Former editor and contributing writer to The New York Times Magazine, Paul has written extensively about education, parenting, poverty, and politics. Paul is a reporter and producer for the public radio program This American Life, he is the founding editor of the online magazine Open Letters, and his writing has also appeared in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, GQ, and Esquire, and on the op-ed page of The New York Times.
