Tired of using a KWL (who ever gets to the L?), needing to give up valuable class time and pulling teeth to get through another list of vocabulary definitions or more disappointingly, finding many texts too challenging for your students to read? Surprised by vocabulary words that students don't seem to know these days or how little they remember the next day/week/month? Ready for some new approaches to help students build vocabulary and activate background knowledge that can be used across subject areas? Come prepared to engage with us as we try out some fresh, updated vocabulary and discussion strategies that honour the best of what we know from the fields of brain research, student engagement, the meta-analysis work of John Hattie and Visual Learning, and etymology/morphology. You will leave armed with strategies that secondary students will actually enjoy using, that lead to increased reading comprehension and deeper reflection, and that help us support diverse learners. This session may be focused on word work, but you'll want to rename it word play that packs a punch.
