In this session, Dr. Makokis will connect residential school, inter-generational historic trauma, cultural resilience and ally work. Twenty years ago a Professor asked, "why is it that I have a PhD in history and I do not know a thing about what you taught me? I have lost out, my children have lost out, my family has lost out." Could it be that we all lost out? As teachers, in 2018, we are tasked with incorporating Indigenous knowledge and worldview in an era of Truth and Reconciliation. Now more than ever, we must collectively understand Canada's colonial history in order to do this work together, Indigenous and non-Indigenous educators working as allies forging a new educational path together. Dr. Makokis, in partnership with Dr. Fletcher of the Faculty of Extension (University of Alberta) developed and deliver the Indigenous Community Industry Relations (ICIR) program that does exactly what teachers are asked to do, that is to incorporate Indigenous knowledge. The program is a success, transforming all who take the courses, moving participants from head to heart. We absolutely must do ally work. Come learn how ally work is possible in a way that practices kindness, honesty, strength and sharing (Creators Laws). We are all related!
