Inspired by the work of Dr. Karen Erickson and Caroline Musselwhite, this session explains how to implement literacy instruction for students with complex needs using The Four Blocks of Literacy. The presentation will explain each block, activities that can be used to help students learn, and provide resources and strategies to help teachers get started or to enhance their current instruction. Participants will learn about each Block and practice and discuss activities that they can start teaching when they get back to school. Embedded in each block will be ways to teach complex communicators and to embed communication skills and AAC use into instruction. Strategies and activities are appropriate for learners with significant disabilities in both a regular classroom and a specialized program.
